I know, I know, Tawwad actually uses the phrase ‘viciously gay’ in the salon, but I couldn’t resist calling the episode fabulously gay.
In this episode we discuss parties at Pennsic, the amazing Clan Blue Feather, which provides a safe space in the SCA (and life) to be LGBTQIA+, along with the differences and overlap between members of the Knowne World Courtesans who are Patrons or protectors, which we call Tullians or Cavaliers.
Then we get into some of the societal conditions that lead to the “courtesan phenomenon” before delving into an exploration of homosexuality in dark ages Spain when it was ruled by Muslims. We learned some surprising things about the history of homosexuality in Islam, and hear some beautiful words on the nature and meaning of love.

The Ring of the Dove, a 10th century treatise on love written in Muslim al-Andalusia, Spain in the “dark ages”. Tawwad discussed the book during the salon and how it recognizes all love between consenting humans as the same. Equally valid in God’s eyes, but not in the law’s.
